Ordering a vinyl release involves waiting months rather than weeks, and the delay has persisted through a long recovery in demand. The cause is the physical process and the machinery that performs it.
The chain has several sequential stages
A master is cut to a lacquer, that lacquer is electroplated to produce metal parts, and those parts become the stampers that press the finished records.
Each stage happens at a different specialist facility in many cases, so the project spends time in transit as well as in production.
Nothing in the sequence can be parallelised, because every step depends on the physical object produced by the one before it.
The machinery is largely irreplaceable
Most presses in operation were built decades ago, during a period when production volumes were far higher than they are today.
Manufacture of new machines resumed only recently and at small scale, so capacity grows slowly regardless of how much demand appears.
Maintaining the older presses depends on scarce parts and on engineers who learned the machines when they were current, which limits how hard they can be run.
Pressing itself is slow per unit
A record is formed from heated compound under pressure, then cooled before it can be removed, and that cycle takes a fixed amount of time per copy.
Rushing the cooling produces warped records, so the cycle length is a physical constraint rather than an efficiency problem to be solved.
An order of a few thousand copies therefore occupies a press for a meaningful period, and the queue behind it waits.
Large orders crowd out small ones
Plants prefer long runs because changeover between titles consumes press time without producing anything sellable.
A major release booking substantial capacity pushes independent orders further back, which is why small labels experience the longest and least predictable waits.
Booking capacity far ahead is the only reliable defence, and it requires committing to a release date long before the recording is finished.
Quality control adds unavoidable time
Test pressings are produced and sent for approval before a full run begins, and that approval loop alone can take weeks.
Skipping it risks pressing an entire order with a defect that only becomes audible on a domestic turntable, which is far more expensive than the delay.
The result is a schedule where the music has been finished for months before the physical object reaches anyone, and release dates are set around the plant rather than the studio.
