Terrestrial broadcast is transmitted to everyone in range simultaneously, so the number of listeners in an area has no effect on quality.
For journeys crossing rural regions, that difference is decisive, and it is why long-distance drivers rely on broadcast more than urban commuters do. Downloaded audio removes the connection problem but reintroduces the selection problem it was meant to avoid.
Local and live information has no substitute
Traffic reports, weather and regional news are useful specifically because they are current and tied to where the vehicle is.
A recorded programme cannot provide that, and navigation applications supply only part of it without the surrounding context a bulletin gives.
Stations have leaned into this, since it is the function least threatened by on-demand alternatives and the one listeners return for. Regional transmitters make it practical, because a bulletin can address a specific stretch of road rather than a whole country.
Companionship works differently from content
A live presenter creates a sense of shared time, with everyone hearing the same thing at the same moment, which recorded audio cannot reproduce.
That quality matters most during solitary and repetitive activity, and driving is among the clearest cases of both.
It also explains why phone-in formats and travel updates remain central to the schedule despite being inefficient as pure content.
Dashboard integration is the practical foundation
Radio is built into vehicles by default, works immediately and requires no account, pairing or subscription of any kind.
As dashboards become screens running phone interfaces, that default position weakens, and streamed services gain equal prominence.
The medium's future in cars therefore depends less on programming than on where the controls sit, which is now decided by vehicle manufacturers.
