Online matches are assembled by a system weighing skill, waiting time and network distance at once. Every complaint about an unfair game traces back to how those three are traded off.
Skill is stored as a range, not a number
Rating systems track an estimate of a player's strength together with a measure of how uncertain that estimate currently is.
A new account has a wide uncertainty band, so early results move the rating sharply. After many games the band narrows and single matches barely shift it.
This is why an experienced player grinding through a bad run drops slowly while a newcomer can climb several tiers in an evening.
Queue time is traded against match quality
A perfectly balanced match exists in principle but might take many minutes to assemble, especially at the top and bottom of the rating distribution.
Systems therefore widen their acceptable skill range the longer a player waits, taking a worse match rather than leaving someone staring at a queue screen.
Rare rating extremes wait longest and get the loosest matches, which is exactly where players are most likely to notice and object.
Server distance constrains the candidate pool
Latency is decided by physical distance and routing, and a match between distant players feels wrong regardless of how well the skills line up.
Matchmakers therefore restrict candidates to a region first and balance skill within it, which shrinks the pool considerably outside peak hours.
Late at night, or in a smaller market, the same rules produce visibly worse matches simply because there are fewer people to choose from.
Teams are balanced by average, not by member
Team modes usually match on aggregate rating, so a strong player paired with a weak one can be placed against two evenly matched opponents.
The averages agree while the individual matchups do not, and both sides experience a game that feels mismatched from their own position.
Restricting how far apart a group's members can be reduces this, at the cost of stopping friends from playing together.
Visible ranks and hidden ratings diverge
Many games display a rank that is deliberately smoother than the internal estimate driving matchmaking, to keep progression legible and motivating.
Players then compare displayed ranks after a match and conclude the system erred, when the hidden numbers were closer than the badges suggest.
Understanding that gap explains most of the apparent unfairness, though it does not remove the underlying compromise between waiting and balance.
