Consistency governs the whole session plan

Sessions are therefore kept to a similar length and time of day, because a voice tires predictably and sounds different in the afternoon than it did in the morning.
Even the narrator's seating and distance from the microphone are marked, since a small shift alters the tonal balance enough to be audible in a direct comparison.
Pacing is slower than ordinary speech
Listeners are frequently doing something else, and comprehension of spoken text depends on pauses that the eye supplies for itself when reading a page.
Narrators therefore leave deliberate space at sentence boundaries and lengthen the breaks between sections, which feels unnaturally slow inside the recording booth.
Playback speed controls have complicated this further, since a narration must remain intelligible for listeners who routinely raise the speed considerably.
Preparation resolves pronunciation in advance
A narrator reads the full text before recording, marking names, foreign words and technical terms that need a decision rather than an improvisation.
Publishers supply pronunciation guides, and authors are consulted for invented names, because an inconsistency across a long book is expensive to repair afterwards.
The same pass identifies where a character's voice must be established and maintained, which the narrator then has to reproduce reliably many hours later.
Errors are fixed by punching in
Rather than restarting a passage, the narrator stops at a mistake and resumes from a point just before it, leaving an overlap for the editor.
The editor then splices the corrected section into place, matching breath, level and room tone so that no join is perceptible in the finished file.
This is why the editing time for a book commonly exceeds the recording time, and why studio noise discipline matters so much throughout.
Delivery standards constrain the master
Distributors specify loudness ranges, peak levels and noise floors, and files outside those bounds are rejected regardless of how good the performance is.
Meeting them requires careful mastering that preserves dynamics while keeping the whole book within a narrow window across many hours of material.
Those requirements exist because listeners move between titles in a single app, and a book that plays noticeably louder or quieter than the last one is experienced as a fault.
